About Laurence Lovat, Consultant Gastroenterologist

Professor Laurence Lovat graduated in 1987, after completing his medical training from the University College London.


He gained an MRC Research Training Award after his 1st Class Honours degree in Nutrition. Following on from an MRC Research Training Fellowship, he completed his PhD at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at the Hammersmith Hospital, which is now part of Imperial College. Later in 1999, he was the senior lecturer at the University College London and in the same year, a consultant at University College Hospital.

From 2001-2008, he was the lead clinician for Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer at UCLH. Prior to this, he had chaired for the North London Cancer Network Upper Gastrointestinal Tumour Board. In addtion to this, he is also a specialist advisor to NICE.

Professor Laurence Lovat's research interests

Professor Lovat continually researches into the prevention of oesophageal cancer, with a keen interest in novel optical biopsy techniques and targeted photodynamic therapy . Additionally, he is the chief investigator for the UK National HALO Patient Registry.

His particular interests in research include:

  • Barrett’s oesophagus
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Novel endoscopic therapies including laser therapy, photodynamic therapy and HALO radiofrequency ablation
  • Oesophageal cancer
