A regular contributor to the academic literature, Professor Lloyd has published more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, 12 book chapters and over 100 abstracts on a variety of subjects including liver surgery, microwave destruction of liver cancer tumours, gall bladder surgery and hernia surgery. Expertise

Professor David Lloyd - laparoscopic surgery

With an international reputation as an expert in his field, Professor Lloyd is a pioneer of many keyhole techniques to treat disorders of the abdominal organs including gall stone disease, hernia, groin pain, adhesions, and problems affecting the spleen, liver and adrenal glands.

Professor Lloyd has over 20 years' experience in laparoscopic surgery and to date has performed more than 4000 gall bladder procedures without bile duct injury, 7000 laparoscopic hernia operations, 400 laparoscopic splenectomies and over 200 adrenalectomies. In 1997, he was the first surgeon in the UK to perform laparoscopic liver surgery and he has one of the largest series of operations involving the gall bladder, hernia, spleen and adrenal glands.

Professor Lloyd's interest in liver cancer led him to develop a microwave machine that destroys liver tumours. This machine is now used in top cancer hospitals worldwide and Professor Lloyd has gained international recognition for co-ordinating an international study on the use of microwaves to treat liver cancer.

Professor Lloyd has also developed a revolutionary new treatment for groin pain in amateur and professional athletes known as the Lloyd Release Procedure.

The Lloyd Release Procedure

Professor David Lloyd - Lloyd Release Procedure

A common complaint in athletes, groin pain is sometimes diagnosed as 'sportsman's hernia', leading to hernia surgery with variable results. In recent years it has become apparent that many cases of groin pain are the result of tension in the ligaments as a result of recurrent strain, rather than hernia.

The Lloyd Release Procedure is a laparoscopic technique to release the inflamed and tense ligaments responsible for the pain. Patients are encouraged to become mobile very soon after the operation and can return to light training in a matter of days and normal training within weeks. The procedure is suitable both for patients with a newly diagnosed groin strain and those who have already undergone conventional groin surgery.

To date, Professor Lloyd has treated over 1000 male and female athletes. Success rates are high with over 97% of patients returning to their sport within 4 weeks of treatment.

'Scarless' gall stone surgery

Professor Lloyd was a pioneer of laparoscopic gall stone surgery (cholecystectomy), performing one of the first procedures of this kind in the UK in 1991. He has since gone on to gain an international reputation for excellence in the field and recently pioneered the 'single port' technique in which the gall bladder is removed through a single incision near the navel. Suitable in selected cases, this innovative technique is even less invasive than conventional laparoscopic surgery, further minimising postoperative pain and scarring.
