Professional experience and history
Mr Quaile qualified from Charing Cross Hospital in 1978 and spent a number of years practising medicine in the Royal Navy. He then joined the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and completed his orthopaedic surgical training at Southampton General Hospital, in the UK.
On accreditation as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1992 he pursued a career in Australia initially as a Consultant in Orthopaedics in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, as a Lt. Colonel, and then in full time private practice with a special interest in spines based at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.
On return to the United Kingdom in 1996, he took up a two year consultant post in general orthopaedics with a special interest in spines, at the East Somerset Trust. In October 1998 he was appointed Consultant Spinal & Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Frimley Park Hospital NHS Trust. His practice was almost exclusively that of spinal disorders.
In 2004 Mr Quaile made the decision to leave the NHS and set up in full time private practice with the aim of developing a multi disciplinary organisation of specialists committed to providing high quality spinal care to individuals.
Mr Quaile is keen to offer patients the option of non-operative solutions for their symptoms before considering surgery unless there is no alternative. When surgery is appropriate he would tend to consider minimal access techniques first and foremost as they are less invasive and have fewer risks and complications. He holds monthly clinical meetings, ensuring best medical practice, at BMI The Hampshire Clinic Hospital.
Teaching and training
Mr Quaile lectures at numerous meetings, seminars and conferences to medical & nursing colleagues, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and members of the public. He is committed to education, organising and hosting complimentary conferences with the SpineWorks team every year, with the aim of updating allied health practitioners and medical & nursing colleagues on advances in treatment of the spine.
Mr Quaile regularly provides training on the AxiaLIF, teaching and demonstrating this surgical technique to other surgeons in the UK and overseas. He is on the Clinical Board for AxiaLIF, Vienna 2008 and teaches on courses in Salzburg. The AxiaLIF is a minimally invasive surgical technique that creates a fusion at L5/S1.
Mr Quaile is medical advisor to the BMI SpineCare product and to The Back Show, held annually in London. In September 2008 he was a finalist in the Independent Health Care Awards, held in London, in the category Best Medical Practice.
